Metal Detecting at Old or Current Fairground Sites

To find the old locations, research is the key. If you haven't resided in the area very long, look for some folks who have. There are many locations where fairs and carnivals set up which are no longer there. Also at the current locations, right after the carnival packs up and leaves is good for coin and jewelry hunting. The one area I was always happy to locate was the penny-pitching site. On one occasion we researched and found a location where the carnival used to set up some 30-40 years ago. The lot was still vacant. We talked to some older neighbors that lived in the area and asked them if they ever went to the event. Did they remember were some of the money pitching sites were located? If we had a site to search we would square off an area with rope or string, so we would do a "grid" search. Locate where the Ferris wheel was set up. You could get lucky and find coins and possibly a ring or bracelet. Remember, adults love to get on the rides too. You know the...

Are You A Duck At The Fairground Shooting Range?

Once you own or start operating as an Internet Business Owner, you are obligated to abide by established legislation, regulations, and codes of practice. Unfortunately as with most legislation, being ignorant of the law is not a defence. It is up to you to ensure you are legal, and the fact that you didn't know, or didn't mean to contravene something, only means that you are at fault, period. It is extremely easy to innocently step outside the boundaries of the law. Mike Filsamine in his latest report, 'The Death of Internet Marketing' tells of a frightening story where he used an online program to generate the wording of legal site documents, only to discover that the application had unwittingly breached another person's copyrighted material to generate those documents. Here's the kicker, because Mike used those generated documents he breached the copyright and had to resolve the issue with the copyrighted owner. But it is even easier to fall foul of the la...

A Brief History Of The Travelling Funfair

Fairs in this country have a long and ancient history, deeply rooted in tradition. The word fair is derived from the Latin 'feria', meaning a holiday and at one time the Romans were credited with the introduction of fairs. It is now generally accepted that their origins are from pagan customs of the people who first settled this land; their seasonal gatherings held for the purposes of both trade and festivity, contained within them the essential elements of the fair. The Romans did much to promote fairs by improving trade and communications throughout the country. During the centuries following the departure of the Romans, many fairs and other festivals were incorporated into the calendar of the growing Christian Church. Charters granted by the sovereign gave the fair legal status and an increasing importance in the economic life of the nation. Merchants and traders from Europe, the Middle East and beyond were drawn to the great chartered fairs of the Middle Ages brin...

From Farm to Fairground - A Look At The Adventure Of Agriculture

Over the fields and far away, the farming culture has come a long way - and progressed into a show-stopper. In 1848, a group of farmers from the Moonee Ponds creek area, took it upon themselves to promote 'Ploughing Competitions', in order to create more than a passing interest in the tepid reception the Agricultural Show received. Been to a Royal Show lately? Little did those farmers know, two centuries later, the sheer enormity that would grow from their efforts. The goliath Royal Melbourne Show, along with other agricultural displays around Victoria, drew an estimated two million visitors this year. That's a whole lot of interested people, right? Then wait till you hear this. According to the ACAS, with more than six hundred agricultural societies across Australia alone, and consisting of our nation's longest ever running institution, an expected ten million will enjoy this year's combined events all up. The history of the show holds a curious and evoca...
